water for elephants

Just finished this book a couple of weeks ago and thought it was worth mentioning.
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, is a story about a 90 year old man remembering his days with a circus during The Great Depression.
It was really moving and really made me stop and think about what it must be like to get old.
I was a big fan of the HBO series Carnivale and the setting kind of reminds me of that particular show, only there was no creepy guy with dark black evil eyes.
I find the 20's & 30's such a fascinating time in history and this book really takes you back to that era.
anyhow I really enjoyed it and hopefully Big daddy is too as he is currently reading it- this is a rare occurrence that we read the same book as we have totally different tastes in literature.
Something tells me he won't be reading The Boleyn Inheritance...

Anyone have any other great reads they can recommend?

I'm looking for some good reads myself...mind you I have five books waiting to be read right now! I haven't read anything lately that has really grabbed me...I love when that happens.

I read Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts last fall and it was the best bookI have read in ages...

...and so on it goes said...

I just finished YSABEL by Guy Gavriel Kay and it was absolutely fantastic. I neglected everything else in my life just to keep turning the pages.

Other all time favorites include...

Mists of Avalon, Pillars of the Earth and the Fionavar Tapestries (also by Kay)

I loved Water for Elephants... loved it loved it. I'm currently working on Case Histories by Kate Atkinson - so far so good. And just finished The Senator's Wife and The Pillars of the Earth - both good but Pillars was pretty long and wordy at points. Ever read Fall on Your Knees or The Way the Crow Flies, both by Ann-Marie MacDonald? Love her writing. And there's always an interesting twist.

Have you read any of Jodi Piccoult's books, I just finished one of her books and I'm hooked.

Also love Phillippa's books as well....and you are so lucky to have a husband that actually picks up a book ;)
